As with most public gardens, The Crosby Arboretum relies on the hard work of dedicated volunteers for a wide variety of jobs from garden maintenance, to preserving archives, to assisting with mailings, and helping with plant sales. Another way that the general public or volunteers can assist us is by volunteering to lead or assist with Quarterly Programs and Events. For example, you may have a specialty or expertise that you would love to volunteer to share with adults, children or families. Currently we are looking for an adult to lead the October Pumpkin Painting on Saturday October 27, 2012 from 10am-11am. The Arboretum provides the pumpkins and the paint but a leader helps to set-up and take-down, directs the activity, works with the children, demonstrates examples of how to paint a pumpkin and what the finished product could look like upon completion. They may also choose to bring an assistant(s) if they wish.
We are also looking for winter quarterly program speakers and topics. This would be for the time period from December through February. Most programs are held on Saturday, and sometimes on Friday.
If you have a suggestion or would like to volunteer to give a program contact me at rstafne@ext.msstate.edu or 601-799-2311 ext 101. I would love to hear from you. Programs usually last about one hour and most are held inside the temporary visitor center. There is a maximum capacity of 30 persons, but certain topics or activities have smaller limits, especially for hands-on demonstrations where participants are actively involved in creating something and need table-space. We can provide a laptop, projector and screen if you wish to use a Power Point Presentation. Just bring your file on a thumb drive. Also we have a copy machine and can B&W copy handouts for you to give to the participants. If you have an outdoor demonstration we can set up tables. In particular we look for things involving plants, gardening, native plants, wildlife, environment, art, crafts, or anything with Piney Woods Heritage.
We hope to see you at a future program and would love to have you assist us!
Happy Gardening!
